Description: BACKGROUNDNon-communicable diseases (NCDs) are the leading causes of morbidity and mortality in Malaysia. About one out of five adults aged 18 years or older were estimated to be diabetic in 2019. A series of National Health and Morbidity Survey (NHMS) showed a clear increasing trend in the prevalence of diabetes from 11.2% in 2011 to 18.3% in 2019. The prevalence of diabetes varied across states, and Negeri Sembilan showed the highest prevalence at 33.2%, followed by Perlis (32.6%) and Pahang (25.7%). Malaysia-s National Diabetes Registry suggests the proportion of diabetic patients achieving the level of HbA1c less than 6.5% has been stable at 32.4% in 2019. However, the proportion of diabetic patients under insulin therapy has been increasing from 23.1% in 2013 to 30.3% in 2019.
